Rainey Road Elevated Water Storage Tanks 1 & 2

In December of 1989, Carroll County Water Authority purchased an existing 500,000 gallon water storage tank from Brown Steel Contractors, Inc., formerly the historic R.D. Cole Manufacturing Comnpany, in Newnan, Georgia. The tank was dismantled at its current location, transported to the new site, modified to suit the water system requirements, and re-erected in 1990. As a result of increasing water system demands and needed maintenance and repairs, Krebs was selected to begin design of a new elevated water storage tank in December 2018. The design of Rainey Road Elevated Water Storage Tank No. 2 consisted of a new 500,000 gallon elevated storage tank, site piping improvements, and SCADA upgrades. Krebs provided construction inspection services during each phase of work which completed in May 2021.

Upon completion of Tank No. 2, Krebs developed a tank rehabilitation and improvement contract for the original water tank. The rehabilitation project consisted of the complete removal and replacement of interior and exterior coating systems. Krebs provided construction inspection services for installation of the new coating systems and the project was completed in April 2022.

Carroll County Water Authority’s proactive planning, design, and construction of these projects have optimized the function and resiliency of the water distribution system in the growing community.

Old Mill Village Water Main Replacement

Faced with aging infrastructure dating back to the 1920’s, the Opelika Utilities Board retained Krebs Engineering to design approximately 20,000 linear feet of new potable water piping within one of the City’s historic districts. The construction project consisted of 4,300 linear feet of 8-inch ductile iron pipe (restrained joint), 3,200 linear feet of 8-inch HDPE pipe (trenchless), 8,560 linear feet of 6-inch HDPE pipe (trenchless), 3,750 linear feet of 3-inch HDPE pipe (trenchless), installation of water system valves and appurtenances, potable water service connections, and miscellaneous abandonment and demolition of existing water facilities. The successfully completed construction project provided a significant amount of relief to the Board’s maintenance crews who were devoting a significant amount of time chasing and repairing leaks. Additionally, the project helped alleviate recurring water quality issues due to the aging infrastructure.

Terris Tatum Tennessee River Intake Facility

The Terris Tatum Tennessee River Intake Facility is a raw water intake for the Quarry Water Treatment Facility located in Madison Alabama. Krebs worked with Madison Utilities to obtain permits from the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, Tennessee Valley Authority, and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to construct the raw water intake along the shoreline of the Tennessee River and located in the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. The intake is a permitted 29 MGD withdrawal from the Tennessee River. The intake pipeline is a 60-inch diameter pipeline which extends over 400 feet into the main channel of the Tennessee River. The Intake pipeline is equipped with two 48-inch diameter passive intake screens with an air burst cleaning system. The raw water pumping station has three vertical turbine pumps with space to add two additional pumps. The raw water pumping station currently has a firm pumping capacity of 12 MGD. The project included an electrical building with a 1.5 megawatt generator.
