TALLADEGA, Ala. (WIAT) — Construction is underway to build an oversized vehicle tunnel under the race track at the Talladega Superspeedway as part of a $50 million “Transformation” project.
Crews had to cut into the race track near Turn 3 in order to build the tunnel underneath the track and are on schedule to complete the tunnel prior to the April 26-28 tripleheader race weekend featuring the GEICO 500. The new tunnel will feature two lanes — wide enough for large vehicles like RVs to pass each other simultaneously — and it will take fans straight to the infield.
“Our customers for 50 years now have had to wait outside until we can let them drive across with the bigger Rvs — and all the haulers that come in with the teams — we had to come across the top of the race track.” Chairman Grant Lynch said. “Now we’re going to go underneath the race track.”
Upon completion, the tunnel will weigh more than 3 million pounds. Due to recent wet weather, that amount of weight is necessary to keep the tunnel underground.
